As a photographer, there’s something magical about motherhood sessions—the quiet intimacy, the tender glances, and the fleeting moments that mark a baby’s first year. My recent session with Bailey and her 6-month-old son, Solomon, was one of those unforgettable experiences. Not only was it a celebration of their bond, but it was also one of my first ventures into shooting with 35mm film using my Olympus OM-2n, alongside my digital camera for light metering.
A Charming Location with a Serendipitous Beginning
This session came together thanks to a bit of courage and a lot of serendipity. Driving through Nolensville, TN, I spotted the most charming white porch swing framed by ivy on a lovely home. Across the street, a creek meandered through the landscape, with the last hints of fall color hanging onto the trees before winter’s arrival. I couldn’t resist—I knocked on the door and asked the homeowners if they’d be open to letting me use their property for a shoot. Thankfully, they said yes!
The Session: A Blend of Film and Digital
Bailey and Solomon were the perfect pair to photograph. Solomon’s wide-eyed wonder and Bailey’s natural grace made every frame feel special. The white porch swing became the centerpiece of the shoot, offering a cozy backdrop that exuded both charm and warmth.
Using the Olympus OM-2n was a thrilling new challenge. Shooting on film required me to slow down and be intentional with each frame. I used my digital camera to light meter, ensuring that the exposure would be just right. The results were a mix of film’s rich, timeless texture and digital’s crisp clarity. Together, they told a complete story.
Highlights of the Day
- On the Porch Swing: Bailey cradled Solomon as the soft afternoon light filtered through the ivy. The timeless feel of the film images added a nostalgic layer to these intimate moments.
- By the Creek: The golden glow of the late fall leaves reflected in the water, creating a dreamy scene. Solomon’s curious gaze as Bailey held him close captured the wonder of childhood.
- In the Ivy: The green ivy framed mother and son beautifully, its natural vibrancy contrasting perfectly with their soft, neutral outfits.
Why This Session Was So Special
This session was a milestone for me as a photographer. Combining film and digital allowed me to explore two different mediums while creating a cohesive gallery for Bailey. Film brought a timeless, tactile quality to the photos, while digital ensured I could capture every fleeting smile and movement with precision.
